- A rigorous bachelor's degree focused on cyber security and cyber defense.
- A strong computer science foundation combined with specialized security coursework.
- Hands-on learning through programming, laboratory activities, projects, field experience, and security exercises.
- Opportunities to participate in current cybersecurity research and faculty-guided projects.
- Access to the Center for Computer Security and Information Assurance (CCSIA).
- Industry-informed curriculum development through the CCSIA's Board of Visitors.
- An internship requirement that provides real-world professional experience.
- Preparation for careers in cybersecurity, information assurance, software security, network security, and related areas.
Exposure to how artificial intelligence and machine learning are reshaping cybersecurity, including AI-driven threat detection, threat response, and the security risks these technologies introduce.
What You'll Learn
Throughout coursework and hands-on activities, students will learn how to:
- Analyze complex computing and security problems.
- Identify vulnerabilities and security risks.
- Design, implement, and evaluate secure computing solutions.
- Apply principles of computer security and information assurance.
- Understand network and system security.
- Apply secure programming and software development practices.
- Use appropriate tools and technologies to address security problems.
- Analyze security requirements and develop appropriate solutions.
- Communicate technical and security information effectively.
- Work effectively as part of a professional team.
- Recognize legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities associated with cybersecurity.
- Evaluate the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in modern security tools, including their benefits and the new attack surfaces they create.
Adapt to new technologies and emerging security threats.
Hands-on Learning
Computer Security students gain practical experience through programming, laboratory activities, security projects, and other applied learning experiences.
Students learn not only how computer systems work, but also how those systems can be protected. This combination of computer science knowledge and security expertise helps students understand security throughout the development and operation of computing systems.
Internship Experience
An internship gives Computer Security students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a professional environment.
Students may work with businesses, government organizations, non-profit organizations, technology companies, security organizations, or faculty research projects. These experiences help students develop technical and professional skills while gaining a better understanding of cybersecurity careers.
Research Opportunities
Students interested in cybersecurity research may have opportunities to work with faculty on projects involving areas such as artificial intelligence security, adversarial machine learning, information assurance, network security, secure software, computer systems, and other emerging areas of cybersecurity.
As artificial intelligence becomes more deeply embedded in both defensive security tools and the tactics used by attackers, students have growing opportunities to study AI-driven threat detection, autonomous threat response, adversarial machine learning, and the security implications of AI systems through faculty-guided research.
Research and independent study opportunities can help students prepare for graduate school or specialized careers in cybersecurity and information assurance.
Career Opportunities
Cybersecurity is essential across virtually every industry. Computer Security graduates can pursue careers with technology companies, financial institutions, government agencies, defense organizations, healthcare organizations, law enforcement agencies, and other employers that depend on secure computing systems.
Potential career opportunities include:
- Cybersecurity Analyst
- Information Security Analyst
