Teaching Interest

Dr. Varcoe DNP, MSN, RN is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nursing at East Stroudsburg University and serves as the Coordinator for the RN to BS completion program. Dr. Varcoe received her Nursing Diploma from St. Luke’s School of Nursing, her BSN from Cedar Crest College and her MSN and DNP from DeSales University. She combines an extensive clinical career with over a decade of teaching experience of pre-licensure and RN students. Her area of expertise includes maternal/child nursing, pediatrics, and nursing fundamentals.

Research Interest

Dr. Varcoe’s research interests include transitional support of novice RNs, maternal/child health and music therapy. She has presented at the local and regional levels on the novice nurse transition.

Claranne Mathiesen has been a member of the Lehigh Valley Hospital stroke team since 1999. Claranne is recognized for over 38 years of nursing expertise in neuroscience nursing. Her experience includes emergency care, interventional care, neurocritical care and medical surgical nursing. She provides consultative services in stroke center development and ongoing maintenance of acute care services to support delivery of stroke care.

Claranne works within a large tertiary stroke system that supports 9 acute care campuses. Her experience includes overseeing clinical operations, development of ongoing performance improvement/quality efforts and staff development. Claranne is actively involved in stroke care delivery both locally and nationally volunteering on several American Stroke Association and American Association of Neuroscience Nursing committees and task forces.

Claranne holds an academic appointment of Assistant Professor of Nursing at East Stroudsburg University since 1992. In this role, Claranne directly supervises and instructs junior and senior nursing students in a variety of clinical settings. Claranne arranges classroom and clinical assignments. Claranne actively supports other faculty by providing her expertise in adult health nursing and participating in other faculty duties as assigned.

Dr. Monica Manchester graduated from ESU (East Stroudsburg University) Nursing Program in 2009. She has been a nurse for over fifteen years and continues to practice at the bedside at LVHN (Lehigh Valley Network). Her nursing experience is primarily in Oncology and Progressive Critical Care Nursing. She completed the Critical Care Course at LVHN in 2009, MSN in 2013 from Drexel University, and her doctorate in 2018 from DeSales University.

Dr. Manchester has taught many courses within ESU’s nursing program including Health Transitions I, Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice course, Leadership, Internship, Community Health course for the RN-BSN, and developed the Health Assessment course and lab in the RN-BSN program, since becoming the RN-BSN coordinator. She also helped develop the simulations for the Junior and Senior level simulation courses. She is the course coordinator of Health Transitions I, and Leadership and teaches clinical sections in addition to the courses. Currently she also works in Oncology at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), working to aid with Magnet and our partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Her staying current in practice is an asset to her ability to teach effectively in the clinical setting. At LVHN, her research for MSN project led to multiple changes on the unit. She completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at DeSales University with her research project focusing on breast cancer patients. Her study was featured in LVHN Daily. In 2019, she attended Anaheim, California to present a poster presentation of her dissertation at the annual Oncology Nursing Society Congress. She served as a content expert for a DNP student’s panel for her scholarly project. For five years she served as the President of Sigma Theta Tau at ESU and attended the Sigma Conference in Washington, DC with two of my colleagues. Since Fall 2019, she serves as the chair of the PET (Promotion, Evaluation & Tenure) committee. She began a committee for adjunct faculty to hear and address any concerns they are having and help them find mentors.

In June of 2020, she completed the Teaching Online Certification Course (TOCC) and received a TOCC award. In July of 2020, she was selected to be the representative of the Oncology department at LVHN and presented her DNP scholarly project to the Magnet Panel for LVHN’s 5th Magnet Designation. She is currently working on an IRB (Institutional Review Board) application to begin my next study at LVHN. In collaboration with Dr. Braddock, they published an article about the impact of COVID-19 on Junior level nursing students for the IRB at ESU. She is an advisor for the Colleges Against Cancer student group and on the board with the American Cancer Society

Teaching Interest

Dr. Royal is committed to teaching pre-baccalaureate nursing students how to assess the rigors of research and make changes in work practices that enhance the quality of nursing care. She comes to East Stroudsburg University, with past experience as an educator at The Phillips School of Nursing at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, NYC, where she was co-lead faculty in the nursing skills lab, and clinical instructor for Adult Health Nursing 1, and Transition to Nursing Practice. She holds a Master of Science degree in nursing from Columbia University, and is certified by the American Nursing Credentialing Center as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Royal is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Beta Epsilon Chapter, Alpha Zeta Chapter), and serves as a member of the nursing research committee at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC. Her career spans over 24 years with clinical nursing experience in home care, pediatric intensive care, cardiothoracic and respiratory care, and medical surgical nursing. She joined the Hospitalist service at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York as a Nurse Practitioner in 2006, and in 2018 and 2019 was awarded Nurse Practitioner of the year by the Hospitalist Medicine department.

Research Interest

Dr. Royal graduated with a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Duke University, School of Nursing where her capstone focused on implementing an education project to teach nurse practitioners how to use the PHQ-9 depression screening tool in patients with chronic diseases, with a strong emphasis on improving care in the sickle cell population.

Dr. Royal research interests includes Global health, leadership in healthcare and nursing, and diversity and inclusion in nursing

Service

Dr. Royal is a Member of the Board of Directors of Amazing Grace Children’s Foundation (AGCF). She participates in their yearly medical mission to Ghana, West Africa and serves as their Director of Volunteer Services. She has participated in several medical missions to West Africa and presented at the AGCF Antimicrobial Resistance Symposium Campaign Launch in February 2020.

Dr. David Holland, PhD, CRNP, PMHNP-BC, RN is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing at East Stroudsburg. Dr. Holland received his PhD from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, his MSN from Drexel University, and his BS from West Chester University.

He is licensed as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) and is certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) by the American Nursing Credentialing Center. Prior to coming to East Stroudsburg University, he taught at Cedar Crest College in the School of Nursing. Dr. Holland has extensive experience working as an RN and CRNP working with diverse populations in the field of mental health

His most recent clinical experience includes working with dual diagnosis patients (substance use and mental health) in both Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient settings. Dr. Holland is committed to preparing pre-baccalaureate nursing students to effectively assess and care for patients in the behavioral health setting with compassion and clinical competency.

Dr. Mackey’s teaching expertise includes nursing fundamentals, medical surgical, gerontologic, community, and leadership. Additionally, she is interested in utilizing a teaching style that facilitates an active student learning environment.

An environment in which students are engaged to participate in their learning process through the use of Socratic questioning and open dialogue. In this environment students are not spoken “at”, but rather “with”, to facilitate understanding and development of meaningful critical thinking skills which can be applied to all areas of patient care.

With over 15 years of teaching experience, in 2018-2019 Dr. Mackey was the recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year; Student Service Award at Excelsior University.

Research Interest

Dr. Mackey graduated with her Doctor of Philosophy from Indiana University of Pennsylvania where her dissertation explored ageism amongst nursing faculty. She graduated with her Doctor of Nursing Practice specializing in Educational Leadership from American Sentinel University. Her capstone project focused on implementing gerontologic education to minimize ageism amongst pre-licensure students.

Dr. Mackey’s main research interest lies in understanding aspects of ageism in nursing education and the nursing healthcare environment. She is also interested in active learning strategies and understanding student's perceptions involving active learning

Service

Dr. Mackey serves the National League for Nursing, Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation as a member of the Nominations Committee and as an On-site Program Evaluator. She is a manuscript reviewer for Nurse Education Perspectives and an NCLEX examination item developer for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

At ESU she is a member of the Program Evaluation Committee. As well as the University Wide Assessment Committee. Additionally, Dr Mackey is a member of the National League for Nursing, PA League for Nursing, American Nurses Association, PA State Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.
